Buying Second-Hand Books: A Guide

So you want to buy some second hand books? Well, you're in luck, because here I have a list of tips for just the occasion!

I only ever really buy books new if they are new releases or pre-orders. If I am able to get them second hand, I usually do, as I like to buy from charity shops to support good causes! Anyway, here are my top 5 tips when it comes to buying second hand books!

Tip 1) Buy in person

This might seem obvious at first, but I'd suggest buying books in person. This means going to second hand shops or charity shops instead of buying online. This is especially useful to readers who are a little... fussy... about the condition of their books!

Tip 2) Amazon

I know, we're all trying to make a conscious effort to avoid Amazon. However, you can buy second hand books from other companies, through Amazon. This is hany if you don't have any second hand shops or charity shops close to you, or if you prefer to shop online. The only real downside to this is that you often aren't able to see the books before you buy them, and they sometimes (often) come more damaged than the listing states.

Tip 3) Timing

Now, this isn't something I personally do, but I have heard others talk about it. There are often patterns to when charity shops and second hand shops get their deliveries and donations. If you have the time, you can jot down when you find the best books and bargains, and over time, see if there is a pattern forming. Then you'll know the best time to head to the shops for some new books!

Tip 4) Budget

This might seem a bit silly, but it is often a very good idea to give yourself a budget. Second hand books are often extremely cheap in comparison to new books, and it can be a bit exciting. It is very easy to go overboard and accidently spend way too much money on books when they're only a pound each! So give yourself a budget, and try your hardest to stick to it!

Tip 5) Shop sizes!

Try to visit both big and small shops. You'd automatically assume that the bigger charity shops and second hand shops would have the best selection, but that's not always the case! Sometimes, it is the smaller shops that have the most varied donations, so make sure to visit those too!

So, that's five tips for buying second hand books! If you have any other tips to share, let me know in the comments!

I love charity shops when it comes to finding books. Some of them can be really good quality to! The majority of the books on my shelves are from charity shops or carboots
